What's Happening in December

OFF THE WALL! 2009: A spectacular weekend where a great collection
of Wairarapa artwork will not only be on display but is all for sale! The
event is for two days only, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th of December
from 10am 4pm. Come find that last minute Christmas gift or find a
piece of artwork to brighten up your own living space. This is our 3rd year
running this event, and is the main fundraiser for the Featherston
Community Centre. For more information about this fantastic weekend

Whats On in the Garden December: Beyond Organics: Come learn
what you can be doing in your garden to feed your family healthy,
homegrown food. Join Setha Davenport, B.A. in Human Ecology, minor
in Sustainable Agriculture, who has been growing organically for over
nine years in several different regions, including two years in Wairarapa.
This course will be offered once a month catering to what is happening
seasonally in the garden.

This months session will focus on soil fertility and how this effects the
nutrients available in the food you grow. Setha will be discussing how to
grow Nutrient Dense Food, and how this effects not only the health of the
plants, but in turn, the health of the humans eating the food.

When: Saturday Dec. 12th 3pm or Tuesday Dec. 15th 7.30pm

Featherston Ukulele Group: Hot on the heels of the October
Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra concert & workshop, a group
of keen musos have started gathering for a jam session on Monday
nights 7.30 at the Community Centre. Beginners most welcome. BYO
Uke!

Southern Exposure: Tune in to 92.7 Arrow FM at noon on December 20th
& 27th to hear the next edition of the Community Centres Southern
Exposure programme. As part of Southern Exposure the Community Centre
will also be broadcasting its Speakers Corner Series later in the evening

Speakers Corner 2009: Our last Speaker in the series, Warren Maxwell,
may be a big musician, but hes chosen Featherston to call home.
Warren, one of the driving forces behind Trinity Roots, Fat Freddys Drop
and Little Bushman has lived in Featherston for just over 3 years. Warren
spoke on December 2nd, as the final guest in a 6-part lecture series
highlighting the lives of fascinating Featherstonians. It was a fantastic
evening and a perfect way to close out the series, with over 60 people
attending.

Speakers Corner, running the 1st Wednesdays of the month at 7.30 from
July December, has offered a chance to find out more about the
interesting people who live in your Community. Each night had a 20-30
minute presentation followed by a question period and supper. The
Community Centre had a great time organising this series & would like to
thank all those who spoke, volunteered and attended these evenings.

Centre Work Bee & BBQ: The Centre is planning a Work Bee & BBQ on
Saturday January 9th from 9 - 4 to spruce up our grounds & prep for our
big Grounds Redesign project. All are invited to come along

Arthritis Clinic: The next FREE Arthritis Clinic is scheduled for Wednesday
February 3rd from 12-4pm. Contact the Community Centre to book your
appointment with Shay the Arthritis Educator.

Red Cross 1st Aid Courses for 2010: We are pleased to announce that
after the successful 1st Aid Course in October, the Red Cross will be
returning to the Featherston Community Centre quarterly to hold their 2-
day basic & refresher courses. The next course is set for Feb. 24th & 26th;
contact the Community Centre to book your spot.

Holiday Hours: The Community Centre office will close for the
Christmas-New Year Holiday season on Wednesday December 23rd 2009
and reopen on Monday January 11th 2010. We wish all Featherstonians
a safe & happy silly season & look forward to seeing you in the new year!

A Big THANK YOU ! The Community Centre and its Committee would
like to extend a huge thank you to many friends and organisations that
have supported the Centre throughout the year. With your assistance
and support we have been able to reach several of our key goals. The
Centre & its Committee have some exciting things planned for 2010 and
we cant wait to continue on our mission to provide Featherston & the
South Wairarapa with a gathering place that will more than satisfy your
expecatations of a Community Centre.

SPEAKERS CORNER 2009: Our fourth installment of Speakers Corner
evening was another educating and fun evening with curious locals
coming to hear Mark Fenwick and his fascinating stories about Giant &
Colossal Squid.

Our November Speakers Corner evening, November 4th, is going to
feature Radio NZs Sound Lounge presenter Kate Mead. Kate is a cellist,
the Production Manager for Radio New Zealand Concert, and a cultural
ambassador for classical music. Classical music is not dying, she insists,
but to keep it alive you have to be prepared to introduce it to all
people at all times and in all ways.

Speakers Corner, running the 1st Wednesdays of the month at 7.30 from
July December, offers a chance to find out more about the interesting
people who live in your Community. Each night has a 20-30 minute
presentation followed by a question period and supper. Gold Coin
donation greatly appreciated.

ARTHRITIS CLINIC: Have questions about Arthritis? Arthritis New Zealand
invites you to a free clinic with Shae, the Arthritis Educator on Wednesday
November 4th from 12 noon 4pm. Call the Community Centre

NEW MONTHLY SERIES: WHATS HAPPENING IN YOUR GARDEN:
Come learn what you can be doing in your garden to feed your family
healthy, homegrown food. Join Setha Davenport, who has been
growing organically for over nine years. Setha will take this monthly series
through the seasons, each month focusing on what is happening and
what needs to done in your garden. This course will be offered in our
Kowhai room twice per month, on the 2nd Saturday and 3rd Tuesday of
the month.

The November session will focus on soil preparation methods and fertility,
the key to growing healthy plants.
When: Saturday Nov. 14th 10am - 12noon OR
Tuesday Nov. 17th 6.30pm- 8pm
Cost: $20 waged/$15 unwaged
There will be time for a potluck snack to share so please feel free to bring
some food with you.

REEL EARTH FILM FESTIVAL: The Reel Earth Film Festival returns to
Featherston! This year s films will be shown at the Community Centre:
"Seven Shorts" on Friday, November 20th (1hr 31min)
"Karearea: The Pine Falcon" and "Crude" on Saturday, November 21st
(2hrs 33min)
"So Right So Smart" on Sunday, November 22nd (1h 39min)

All sessions begin at 7:30pm and cost $5. G$ accepted. Supper will be

SWISH SCHWAP SUMMER CLOTHING SWAP!: Youve read about it in
the papers & maybe seen it on TV or the internet. Now were bringing
you our version of the Clothing Swap. For a $5 donation to the
Community Centre you can update and refresh your summer wardrobe!
Bring your good quality clothes & accessories in & swap. We are going to
operate on a One in/One out basis. Featherstonians are all shapes &
sizes, so there is bound to be something for everyone. In addition, we will
also have Angie from Deja Vu onsite for those who may have Summer
items that they would like to put on consignment. Sunday November

SPEAKERS’ CORNER 2009: Our third installment of Speakers’ Corner evening filled our Main room once again, with curious locals & people from as far as Wellington coming to hear team and leadership coach David Savage.
Our October Speakers’ Corner evening, October 7th, is going to feature Mark Fenwick, one of the crew who worked on the Giant Squid at Te Papa. Come and listen to Mark’s fascinating underwater tales – Molluscs I have met, Sea Monsters, Mussels & more!

CALLING ALL MOUNTAIN BIKERS: Do you live to ride ? XC, DH, or FR?? Looking for some riding buddies? Interested in group rides, trails in the area and the possible formation of a club ? COME & PAINT !: Do you need a place to create your masterpiece ? Need a place to practice & improve your painting ? Ever wanted to paint but didn’t know where to start ? Come & be inspired Tuesdays 7-9pm in the Community Centre’s Art room. Bring your projects and ideas along. Let Monica help you through the process. Beginners most welcome. Basic materials are supplied, but you are welcome to bring your own. Koha towards the purchase of art supplies. Any donations of test pots, paint & art supplies greatly appreciated.

PARLEZ-VOUS FRANCAIS?: Keen to brush up on your French ? Join Kartini Mondays @ 7pm. This conversational class is designed for those who have done a bit of French already. However, if you are a total beginner you will be sure to find this useful as well. Classes are by Koha, & feel free to bring along goodies to share!

MEDITATION SERIES: Meditation has a proven record in its ability to improve health, awaken happiness, and to help you become relaxed focused and peaceful. Come try Calm Abiding Meditation with Venerable Ngawang Lhasto. Venerable Lhatso is a western Buddhist nun with many years of practice and training in meditation. This 6-week course will guide you through the common obstacles to meditation, by skillful application of the appropriate antidotes. HARAKEKE/FLAX WEAVING: Need a big workspace or looking for inspiration for your weaving project ? Join Michelle in our Main room, the 2nd Sundays of the month from 2-5pm starting October 11th. All abilities welcome. For more information contact Michelle 308 6553.

PILATES: Bodymind Pilates are set to start a 10 week Beginner/Intermediate series of Pilates on Thursday October 15th at 6.30pm in our Main room. These hour long sessions are a great way to tone up for the sunny season. It is $100 for the 10-week term and entitles you to full membership and access to the Bodymind Pilates studio up in Masterton, which holds over 20 classes per week! YOGA: After a short break, Nora returns October 17th with the very relaxing Saturday morning Hatha Yoga sessions, 10.30-noon. Drop-ins encouraged. $90 for the 10-week term, or $12 drop-in waged/$5 unwaged.

SOUTHERN EXPOSURE: Broadcasting of Featherston recorded content begins October 18th on 92.7 Arrow FM. As part of Southern Exposure the Community Centre will be broadcasting its Speakers’ Corner Series as well as information relating to the Centre. Tune in on October 18th to hear Dr. Troy Baisden & his talk on Easter Island.

RED CROSS 1ST AID COURSE: The October 5th & 9th courses are now full. If you are interested in attending a future course, please register your interest with the Community Centre.

UPDATE ON OUR GROUNDS REDESIGN : We are making good progress updating our building & grounds & there are some great plans under way. At this stage we are on the hunt for donated building supplies, particularly exterior paint & timber. If you or anyone you know may be able to assist the Community Centre in this exciting project, please contact us. It’s our aim to provide the residents of Featherston & beyond with gathering place that will exceed their expectations of a Community space.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN SEPTEMBER

GREETINGS!

SPEAKERS’ CORNER 2009: Our second installment of Speakers’ Corner was a great success and featured Muay Thai Kickboxing fighter, trainer, coach & mentor Sue Latta.

Our September Speakers’ Corner evening, September 2nd, is going to feature team and leadership coach David Savage. Mindset and mental agility are the starting point for every achievement, says David, director of Elevate Coaching. Better known as “Sav”, he has been a Professional Coach for six years, and has made Featherston his home for the last two and a half years.

“I help people and organisations clarify what their goals are and create pathways to get them there,” he explains. Drawing on a combination of neuro science and sports psychology, Sav has worked with clients as diverse as singer-songwriters, businesspeople, competitive athletes and government ministries.

CLEAN UP FEATHERSTON: The 3rd Annual Clean Up Featherston is scheduled for Saturday September 12th 10am-Noon. Come out and spend the morning being part of the Great New Zealand Spring Clean. A yummy Potluck lunch follows.

S.W.A.L.A CAR WASH & SAUSAGE SIZZLE: S.W.A.L.A., the South Wairarapa Adult Learning Association will be holding a Car Wash and Sausage Sizzle at the Community Centre on Saturday September 19th from 9am-2pm. $5 per car with proceeds going to support their courses & programmes.

GARDEN DESIGN COURSE: Looking for ideas for this year’s garden? Spring is in the air & Sue Davis is returning with her 7-week course starting the week of September 21st. Classes are Mondays 6.30-8.30 and $100 for the Course. For more information & to register, contact the Community Centre

TAI CHI: Michael has returned from his training in Australia and has resumed his Tai Chi for Health series. Newcomers most welcome! These classes are offered on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm – 8.30pm.

RED CROSS 1ST AID COURSE – CHANGE OF DATE: After some discussion with Red Cross regarding expected class sizes, we are changing the dates for the Featherston 1st Aid Course. This course will now be held on Monday October 5th and Friday October 9th. Monday October 5th, Day 1 will cover the Basic 1st Aid, and Friday October 9th will be the Day 2 refresher/re-certification. SOUTHERN EXPOSURE: Broadcasting of Featherston recorded content begins October 18th on 92.7 Arrow FM. SOUTHERN EXPOSURE INFORMATION NIGHT: Arrow FM 92.7 and the Featherston Community Centre are holding an information evening at 7pm on Wednesday August 12th. We are looking for people interested in hosting their own monthly radio programme that will be recorded and edited in the South Wairarapa and then brought up to Masterton for broadcasting. Training and support provided. If this interests you, give us a ring.


MICROWAVE COOKING CLASSES: Supergrans & WOOPS invite you to their microwave cooking classes. The free 4-week course begins August 19th and runs Wednesdays 10am-12.30pm. All the food is supplied. Come and learn how to cook 3 full meals using your microwave, including chocolate cake!

Speakers' Corner


Starting July 1 2009, the Featherston Community Centre will be hosting Speakers' Corner, a lecture series starring some very interesting members of our community. These evenings of talks, discussion and supper will begin at 7:30pm on the first Wednesday of every month from July to December.

Geoscientist Dr. Troy Baisden begins the series with a presentation on his recent trip to Easter Island. Sue Latta, our very own Muay Thai (kickboxing) world champion, will share some motivational stories in August. David Savage, professional team and leadership coach, will join us in September to share ideas from his work with some of NZ's most successful people. In October we will hear some exciting underwater tales from Mark Fenwick, part of the team who worked on the giant squid at Te Papa. November brings us the fabulous Kate Mead, producer and presenter of Sound Lounge on Radio NZ Concert. And in December, who else but Warren Maxwell, composer and musician for Trinity Roots, Fat Freddy's Drop and Little Bushman. What a line-up!

These evenings promise to expand our minds and social circles. We look forward to seeing you there!

June Newsletter

GREETINGS FROM THE FEATHERSTON COMMUNITY CENTRE!
A BIG THANKS! Over the last couple of months we have received a huge amount of support from several organisations. We would like to thank the Featherston RSA for the donation of their old chairs, Trust House for the grant to repair and replace our leaky skylights, and to the Council and crew for our new yellow directional sign on Fitzherbert St. We would also like to thank Dulux and Resene for their donations of paint to improve the interior of the Centre and for our Youth Week Mural Project.

SPEAKERS CORNER 2009: Come rub shoulders with some of Featherstons most fascinating residents! Starting on Wednesday July 1st the Community Centre will be hosting a monthly Speakers series with some very interesting Featherstonians. First up, on Wednesday July 1st,we have Dr. Dirt, aka Troy Baisden, who has recently returned from his work on Easter Island. Stepping into the ring for our August 5th evening is champion kickboxer and trainer Sue Latta. These sessions are the 1st Wednesday of the month, from 7:30 onwards, with a gold coin donation. Each session has a 30-45minute presentation, followed by supper and some lively discussion. For more information contact the Centre.

WOOPS : The WOOPS organisation has returned to the South Wairarapa ! A representative from the WOOPS organisation will be at the Community Centre from 9.00-12.00 on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. Appointments available by ringing the Community Centre or the WOOPS office on 06 377 0066

ANY GREEN THUMBS OUT THERE ? The Garden Design course is returning ! Sue Davis is back with a new session of her popular garden design course. Starting on Tuesday July 7th, this seven week series runs Tuesdays from 9.30-2.30. The course fees are $180.00 and includes three field trips. PILATES & YOGA UPDATE : We received a huge response to last months request for people interested in Pilates and Yoga. Our first session of Pilates, run by Kathy from Bodymind Pilates, started on Monday May 25th. This series runs Mondays from 6 .30-7.30, $60 for the series, and allows access to classes and the studio in Masterton. A minumum of 9 are required to run the series, and latecomers are most welcome !

EXPANDED TAI CHI OFFERINGS ! To complement our hugely popular Thursday morning Tai Chi Classes, the Centre is now also hosting a Tuesday afternoon modified, ACC approved, class instructed by Keiko from the YMCA. These classes are from 2.00-245pm, and have a gold coin donation.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMME: The Featherston Community Centre has been researching the viability of hosting a School Holiday Programme for this upcoming July holidays. A survey was sent out to parents through the districts school newsletters. We are now reviewing these results and examining our options.

COMMUNITY PATROLS : In light of recent criminal activity in Featherston, a group of concerned citizens are setting up a Community Patrol group that will be based out of the Community Centre. At this stage the group is in the process of organizing themselves, liasing with the local Police, and are planning a meeting in June.
